Sustainability Transitions Summer School (STSS) 2017 was held from 10-28 July in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, hosted by Universitas Gadjah Mada. This STSS is part of Food Security and Climate Change (FSCC) initiative co-founded by the Erasmus+ Programme of European Union, and the South East Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC). Co-organizing the Summer School are Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) of Indonesia, and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) of Vienna, Austria. The UC members are Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) and UGM in Indonesia, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Malaysia, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in the Philippines, and Kasetsart University (KU) in Thailand. Tokyo University of Agriculture (NODAI) is an Associate Member, while SEARCA is the Consortium Secretariat. This year, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) of Indonesia is a new affiliate member.

One of graduatee of MPPDAS, Bachtiar Wahyu Mutaqin, M.Sc. awarded Prix Mahar Schutzenberger 2017 from Association Franco-Indonesienne pour le Developpement des Science (AFIDES) on Monday, 3 July 2017. There are other 3 young Indonesian researchers, Dita Floresyona, Achmad Choiruddin and Made Windu Antara, awarded Prix Mahar Schutzenberger 2017. The award was directly given by Helene Schutzenberger as a president of AFIDES in front of Deputy ambassador of Indonesia in France, The principality of Monaco, The principality of Andorra, Indonesian Education and Cultural Attache in Paris, AFIDES board of jury and other 70 invited guests. In his speech, The president of AFIDES expressed huge supports to Indonesian young researcher to develop science and knowledge in each majors. The Indonesian Education and Cultural Attache in Paris said that the awards is a capital to have better research collaboration between Indonesia and France.
The Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), attended the annual event “The Twin College Envoys Program (TWINCLE) ASEAN Consortium Symposium Program Meeting” held in Chiba University, Japan, on 16 to 20 March 2017. The project aims to gather all members of the consortium, which amount to at least 15 universities in six participating countries in order to develop activities which pairs up graduate students skilled in educational research with those striving for cutting edge practical scientific research, and trains highly skilled individuals. The TWINCLE is a program for teachers who have global ability and vision and researchers who have a global mind under a consortium chaired by the Chiba University. The event was held for 4 days, which started with the opening of the meeting three university groups, a presentation of program in the future, presentations of TWINCLE students-participants and ended with the research awards for the outstanding students.
On June 19-28 July 2016, one of MPPDAS student Desy Wahyuning Tyas joined in Sakura Science Program in Chiba University Japan. Sakura Science Program is a program for enhancing exchanges between Asia and Japan of the youths who will play crucial role in the future field of science and technology through the close collaboration of industry-academia-government. The program is a new project beginning in April 2014, held and funded by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The program facilitates short-term visits of competent Asian youths to Japan for learning science and technology. The program aims at rising the interest of Asia youths toward the leading Japanese science and technologies at Japan universities, research institutions and private companies. The program want to promote science and technology as well as culture of Japan to Asia youths.
Seminar Nasional ke-2 Pengelolaan Pesisir dan Daerah Aliran Sungai dilaksanakan di Fakultas Geografi, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta pada tanggal 12 Mei 2016. Seminar ini diselenggarakan oleh Program Magister Perencanaan Pengelolaan Pesisir dan Daerah Aliran Sungai (MPPDAS) yang merupakan minat dari Program Studi S2 Geografi Fakultas Geografi, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Salah satu tujuan utama seminar ini adalah untuk mendiskusikan perkembangan dan tren penelitian pengelolaan di wilayah pesisir dan daerah aliran sungai.
Muh Aris Marfai is a professor, faculty member and researcher of the Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Indonesia, where he has been since 1999. Born in Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia, he received his doctoral degree in Geography from Justus-Liebig-Universitaet, Giessen, Germany in 2008 after completing an MSc in Earth System Analysis at International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) The Netherlands in 2003. He completed his bachelor’s degree program in Physical Geography in 1998 from the Faculty of Geography UGM. In September 2013, at the age of 37, he assumed his professorship at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Sebagai salah satu sarana dan sebagai wadah untuk sosialisasi program Beasiswa Unggulan secara lebih luas lagi, MPPDAS Fakultas Geografi UGM melaksanakan kegiatan “Character Building Beasiswa Unggulan Kemdikbud & Seminar Nasional ke-1 Pengelolaan Pesisir dan Daerah Aliran Sungai”. Program kegiatan ini dimaksudkan untuk membentuk karakter generasi muda Indonesia yang handal, unggul, mempunyai jiwa kepemimpinan serta
meningkatkan kualitas publikasi penerima beasiswa. Kegiatan ini juga disertai dengan pemberian sosialisasi dan pemahaman terhadap program Beasiswa Unggulan secara luas.
Four outstanding graduate students from Master Program on Planning and Management of Coastal Area and Watershed (MPPDAS) faculty of Geography UGM visited Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for Joint Student Project (JSP). This Joint Student Project lasted for 1 week (16—24 August 2014). The fortunate students are Wahyu Tyas Pramono, Hendy Fatchurohman, Annisa Hamidah, and Alfiatun Nur accompanied by two lecturers, who are Bachtiar Wahyu Mutaqin, S.Kel., M.Sc. And Dr.rer.nat M. Anggri Setiawan, M.Sc. Together with students from the host university, Institute of Geosciences, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) Niteroi Brazil, and 5 students from Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi, Mexico, they had a research in the topic of Urban growth in the Rio de Janeiro coastal area. This activity is also included in the consortium of Center for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD) consists of 11 institutions from Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa.
MPPDAS provided characteristic building program by holding Outbound Activities in Magelang Outbound Camp on Tuesday, November 5 2013. The activities aim to nurture the students’ skill and knowledge competence with professional attitude, concern and excellent character. Students of MPPDAS batch 2012 and 2013 followed the whole activities. Beside the students, the outbound were joined by Chief and Secretary of MPPDAS Program as well as others supporting staffs.
Our first day of the TWINCLE program in Chiba University was started quite late since we have landed in Japan in the middle of the night on the previous day. After spending some times of sightseeing on the neighborhood in the Chiba international dormitory, we have been guided to go to Chiba University for the first time of our life by Oshima Sensei, one of the supervisors for our program.
In the university, we got a brief introduction about Chiba University. Afterwards, we have an explanation of schedule and all the task and requirements that should be done during and after the program.
